The inspirational Alastair Humphreys throws down:

… On June 21st we want as many people as possible to try a microadventure.

HERE’S THE PLAN:

Grab a friend, a colleague or go on your own.

Head for the countryside (between June 15 and 30) by bike, on foot, by train, canoe or however you like. Sleep out under the stars (bivvy, not tent!) and have fun.

That’s it!

Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools. …

All that ultralight gear you’ve seen on the internet?

You can wander the campground and ask owners in person how they like it.

Gear talk is by far the most popular topic of conversation.

I looked closely at the latest in solar powered electronics. Still too heavy. More trouble than it’s worth.

If I hiked the PCT in 2013, I’d use AAA battery operated gear.

If you realize you’re missing something, at Mile 43 is the incredible Laguna Mountain Sports & Supply (PHOTO). Crammed with all brands of hiking essentials.

I want to climb the 300ft spiral staircase

The 300ft spiral staircase has been installed on the wall of the Taihang Mountains in Linzhou to offer the thrill of mountaineering without the danger.

But senior climbers beware – you have to be under 60 to be allowed on the staircase.
