best day hike Grand Tetons

Some outdoor adventurer currently living in a van recommends Glacier Gulch to Delta Lake (3-6hrs) off-trail:

… If you want to get away from the crowds and truly experience the rugged majesty of Wyoming’s Teton Range, you’ve gotta get off the beaten path. This is easier to do than one would think: several canyons leading into the mountains do not have established trails, and countless beautiful alpine lakes and dramatic summits are rarely visited. …

… The route ascends approximately 2300 vertical feet over the course of 1.5 miles (as the crow flies). It involves a little bushwhacking and a steep off-trail hike that’s a little too rugged for the typical tourist. Since there’s no trail up Glacier Gulch, you may come across, at most, a few groups of like-minded adventurers throughout your excursion.

BASE jumping world record

Aussie Dr Glenn Singleman has held the record (jointly) since 1992.

First Glenn and Nic Feteris climbed, then BASE jumped 5,955 metres (19,537 ft) from one of the Trango Towers.

In 2006 he and his wife Heather Swan climbed Mt Meru in the Indian Himalaya, jumping from 6604m (21,667ft), in the process setting new Guinness World Records for both BASE jumping and wingsuit flying.

Without question this is one of the best hikes in the world. In Spanish it’s called Ciudad Perdida.

Google Earth: Hiker’s Edition

That’s what Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch is calling it.

… Google Earth released a new edition of its desktop app which hikers, runners and cyclists are going to love. They call it Google Earth 5.2. I call it the Hiker’s Edition.

One of the new features allows you to recreate the path of a hike or bike ride by ingesting geo-data from one of your GPS devices. The visualizations show you the speed, elevation, and other stats from your hike, which you can see as an animation inside Google Earth. …

suspension bridge in Switzerland

This photo of Grant Olsen just won a contest.

… …as we stepped off the train in Lauterbrunnen on our first day, lighting struck a steel beam just a couple feet above our heads and slammed everyone to the ground! It was a fitting start to an amazing – and occasionally dangerous – trip.

As we made our way toward a gorgeous little town called  Wengwald, we noticed this suspension bridge. Upon closer inspection, it appeared no one had used it in years. I cautiously made my way out on to the bridge and was rewarded with the most awe-inspiring view of my life! My sister, Diana, snapped this photo and it’s my prized possession from our trip! …

falling to fly, not falling to die

Dean Potter is one of the most interesting extreme athletes in history.

Death wish? … Or does Dean have it all figured out?

Dean Potter is characterized by creativity, commitment and challenge. He started climbing as a child, with a free solo fall from a stone wall as one of his earliest memories. Since that time, he has speed soloed Half Dome and El Capitan, Cerro Torre, and Fitzroy. He was the first to make a one-day free ascent of El Cap and Half Dome, and a one-day speed linkup of both of those big walls and Mount Watkins, Yosemites third Grade VI wall. He has also established testpiece crack routes in the Utah desert and highball boulder problems in Yosemite.

Dean has walked the longest highlines, often without a safety leash, though he has dedicated over a decade of engineering and testing to create the safest highline systems currently used. Most recently, he has combined BASE jumping skill with highlining and free soloing, using a specially engineered ultralight BASE rig as his backup system. …
