We attempted to do the circuit this past Jan, but had to settle for the Crossing. The views were indeed worth waiting out the weather for 3 days, particularly up on Mt. Ngauruhoe. However, I don’t remember a more busy hiking trail. It’s the only place where we were literally in a traffic jam on the trail coming off the mountain. Completely agree with you that the circuit is the best way to enjoy it.
