New Balance MT101 Running Shoes

Buzz of the Adventure Running blog recommends the New Balance Men’s MT101 Trail Running Shoe.

My stockpile 4 pairs of minimalist New Balance 603 Country Walkers are plum wore out. … I’m due for a new New Balance shoe, assuming I can get them in very wide sizes. (serious bunions!)

Thanks Buzz. I’ll buy myself a pair for Christmas.

  1. Thank you for the gracious reference.

Agreed on width … width for some of us is the biggest issue. Like the reviewer says, the MT101’s have to be sized up. Very few trail shoes come in width sizing due to lower sales volume. Fortunately anything with a soft upper helps accommodate those of us with Sherpa-like feet, and another good trick is to simply skip lacing the first few holes, or tie a knot halfway up the lacing pattern so the lower and upper sections can be tightened differently.

While every shoe company goes all-out with assorted colors, overlays, patterns, and other worthless bells and whistles, NB actually did something completely different with the MT: “reverse lugs” on the heel of the outsole. The reviewer didn’t identify this totally new design component, but they are clearly visible in his photo’s, and are a significant departure from norm. Instead of traction lugs protruding, the lugs on the heel of the MT’s are indented! By subtracting rather than adding rubber, weight is reduced and the Delta H is lowered.

Lastly (pardon my wordiness), most people, even myself, will find the MT inadequate for off-trail travel, marginal on rock, and excellent on smooth dirt.

  2. I find them fine for my wide feet. I wear a small sock that has a bit of heel and toe cushion. Straight out of the box and they feel like old friends.
