  1. The photo above reminds me of Madeira, another European island in the Atlantic. Madeira is also good for hiking, as long as you have a head for heights. It is particularly famous for its levada walks. The levadas run along the mountain sides and are little water channels that were built for irrigation. On Flickr there are some photos of Madeira.
