hiking Mediterranean islands …

I’m ruminating on a series of hikes for this Fall:

Cinque Terre in northern Italy → CorsicaSardiniaSicily → …

I’d take ferries from one to the next, I assume.

Leave a comment if you have any advice for me. I’ve never hiked this region before.

  1. Good idea.

Cinque Terre is renowned, but think of it more as a girlfriend trip than a real hike.

MUCH better would be the GR 20 in Corsica. It goes almost coast-coast and is surprisingly rugged and mountainous and doesn’t become snow-free until May. Kilian ran the whole 180 kms in something like 32 hours last year. More reasonably, a friend was there last month on his honeymoon, and reported it outstanding. Americans don’t know about it, but the Euros crowd in there during the 3 summer months.

One could make a career out of doing the Grand Randonee routes!

  2. I second Cinque Terre, and it is way too crowded all the way up to winter. In fact, you might just want to skip it altogether…

In Sardegna, there’s the Orosei Coast.

To hop from island to island, consider flying. Ryanair connects some of these places for much cheaper than ferries.

      1. I’m going to Mt. Pasubio tomorrow! Reputedly it has some great iron roads, but we’ll see.
