I’ve seen dozens of rattlers in my 50 or so years spent mostly in northern California. Come close to steppin’ on ’em a few times too.
I’ve had similar experiences as John. Grew up in Souther California and used to go hiking a lot and would come across this. However, my grandparents live in Norther California up near Lake Shasta and my brothers and I came across one there as well. It blended in to the poison oak we were looking at. We ended up killing it and keeping the tail of it.
