My vote’s in for New Zealand!
We’re going on a 6-week trip around the South Island this summer and will barely scratch the surface of the amazing hikes available. And yes, we’re going to do the Mildford Track to see if it lives up to the hype!

Yes, it was fantastic. A bit hot walking from the carpark up to to plateau but once you are up there the views are great and there was anice breeze. We were on the Overland Track in February. You probably passed us! (last night was the 13th at Echo Point Hut)

Must get to NZ some time. Got destroyed by the sandflies on Hinchinbrook Island this year and I hear they are WORSE in NZ. Puts me off a bit….
I lived in New Zealand for a year, hike for 3 months.
Having never encountered sandflies before, I was shocked.
On the other hand, I only saw them on the west coast of the South Island. (Driven off the Heaphy after one night. Left if off our best hikes list only due to sandflies.)
Stay on the east side of the mountains and it’ll be right. Michelle, you WILL get them on the Milford.
Frank, I finished the Overland on Feb. 7th and headed on down for part of the South Coast Track.
THAT was a great tramping season for weather.
I spent my 50th at Windy Ridge Hut on the 12th Feb with a good crew. We then headed down to Hobart for a couple of nights R&R …beers went down well.
Thinking of doing the South Coast Track in late March with one other guy. We had a great trip there the first time we did it….a LOT of MUD.
Sandflies are bastards of things, my daughter looked like she had measles when we finished Hinchinbrook!
Luckily the sandflies (we’ve only encountered a few on the North Island) seem to prefer biting my partner to me. So I just have to stay near him at all times and I’ll be sweet!
