hiking Multnomah Falls, Oregon

You could drive right to the base of the famous Falls. Capture the photo …

… then drive on to a less crowded hiking adventure.

Or … you could do a nice day hike finishing with a “coffee” here while enjoying that vista.

Of many options, an easy circuit would be to park at the Wahkeena Falls trailhead. Climb up and up through the big trees, much higher than you would expect.

Traverse over to the top of Multnomah Falls …

And descend the “normal” trail to the restaurant.

Perhaps 2hrs, walking normally.

I enjoyed it.

Waitukubuli National Trail, Dominica

Destined to quickly become one of the great walks of the world, Waitukubuli in the Caribbean is “opening soon” … though some hikers have already pieced it together, unofficially.

Dominica, the Caribbean’s Nature Island, is looking to share its beauty with hikers through the development of a 115-mile cross-island walking trail. The Waitukubuli National Trail – named after the Carib Indian name for Dominica – is a major initiative by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, in partnership with the Regional Council of Martinique and funded by the European Union.

The Waitukubuli National Trail is divided into 14 continuous sections. Hikers can expect to cover its entire length in two weeks, or just choose individual trail segments to enjoy. The trail passes through mountainous landscapes and rainforests, showcasing the rivers and waterfalls for which Dominica is famous and taking visitors into the heart of local communities.

Here, Ashton Lugay of the Waitukubuli National Trail Project explains how the trail is being developed and the impact it will have on Dominica’s tourism industry.

beautiful Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Two million people a year visit Multnomah Falls.

I’ve never been one of them. … Until now.

It’s one of the most scenic waterfalls anywhere. Perfection.

… two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m). Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the State of Oregon. …

Waimoku Falls / Pipiwai Trail, Maui

Trip report by site editor Rick McCharles.

Most tourists in Maui drive a rent-a-car to Kipahulu Visitors Center in Haleakala National Park, the end of the famed Road to Hana.

The main attraction are the so called “Seven Sacred Pools“, a name invented by some overzealous tourism marketer. In reality, the ʻOheʻo Gulch has dozens of pools and a number of waterfalls, a few very welcoming of swimmers.

Oheo-Gulch-pools

Welcoming if you’re not scared off the warning signs posted everywhere.

I spent only a few minutes at the pools, instead quickly beginning the climb up Pipiwai Trail. I knew it would be fantastic as Trailspotting calls it their “favorite hike on Maui”:

Distance: 4 miles
Type: Out & Back
Difficulty: Medium
Elevation gain: 900ft (from 200 – 1,200ft)

Beginning at the rugged and remote eastern Maui coastline follow the Pipiwai stream inland and you’ll soon be surrounded by dense jungle, heading towards a series of waterfalls each increasingly more impressive than the last. En route you’ll cross bridges and streams, and negotiate an unforgettable boardwalk journey through a dense bamboo forest that towers so far above your head that daylight struggles to reach you. And since the Hawaiian islands are some of the wettest places on earth, you’re sure to be impressed with the towering 400 foot wall of water at the end of the trail that is Waimoku Falls. …

Pipiwai Waterfalls & Bamboo Trail

The bamboo was the highlight for me, too.

Actually, this kind of bamboo is one of those dread invasive species. But it’s an invasive species I love. I’m an invasive species, myself.

You’ll be warned about mosquitos. I never saw even one during 2wks on Maui in October.

Pipiwai gets better and better the closer you get to Waimoku Falls.

The other highlight of this hike for me was tenting at Kipahulu Campground right at the trailhead.

I spent two nights. It’s free after you pay for your National Parks pass. Authorities are frantically improving the visitor center right now. I expect the primitive campground will be improved, as well.

Walking the shoreline here is highly recommended. A half mile stretch is called the KAHAKAI TRAIL.

Santiaoling Waterfall Trail, Taiwan

Another superb hiking trip report by Lonely Planet Taiwan author ROBERT SCOTT KELLY.

… This trail that runs along the upper valley of the Keelung River, the main river flowing through Taipei, is as fun-in-the-sun as a day at a waterpark – and with its half dozen falls …

The trail used to be a favorite in the early days of the hiking club but we hadn’t been back for years. It was only the fact that I didn’t have the car on Sunday that the idea to go here popped into my head. Need to give my head a good shake for forgetting a place like this. …

I’ve started by researching the Havasupai Trail. It leads to Navajo Falls, Havasupai Falls and Mooney Falls.

WOW.

Looks great. But I hear it’s a bit touristy.

trek Kaieteur Falls, Guyana

Have you ever heard of this magnificent waterfall?

… Kaieteur National Park, Guyana. Kaieteur Falls has none of the tourist facilities of the other great wonders of the world, not even handrails or fences to protect you from the drop which, apparently, lasts 7 seconds. As such it is a truly wonderful, undiscovered gem.

… The Falls are accessible both by air and by land. By air, it is an hour’s flight from Georgetown, the Capital of Guyana. By land there is a popular adventurous wilderness trek that requires 3 to 5 days to complete.

Roraima Trekking, Venezuela

I just got a recommendation from Andreas for a German / Venezuelan trekking guide company Kamadac based out of Santa Elena in the Gran Sabana.

Looks good.

For those who love to hike, the Roraima Trekking is one of the highlights of Venezuela. The tablemountains belong to the oldest rock formation in the world. During millions of years they have been formed. Most of the vegetation you find there, grows only at the table mountains. The Roraima tepui is the highest in Venezuela. Bizzare stone formations, barren rock landscape and unique plants shape the landscape. A three day tour brings us up to the Roraima. On the top we make a day excursion and visit the valley of crystals and the place where three countries meet “Brasil, Venezuela and Guyana.”

This tour can made any time of the year. During the rainy season we recommend it in combination with a boat trip to the Angel Falls.

Duration: 6 days

Daily walks: 3 to 7 hours

PRICE PER PERSON : 520 EUR (2 persons), 470 EUR (3 persons), 295 EUR (4 persons), additional day 50 EUR

hike Monkman Provincial Park, B.C.

Bluepeak was the first blog to announce the opening of the Monkman Pass Memorial Trail in Northern British Columbia.

This 63-km long trail follows the route that Alex Monkman and his band of pioneers established in the 1930s. Most of this little-known, but spectacular trail is in Monkman Provincial Park, leading from Kinuseo Falls over the Rocky Mountains to Hobi’s Cabin on the Herrick River. There are very few facilities along the route – this is a true wilderness experience.

The most famous feature is Kinuseo Falls.

Monkman Expeditions can guide you on the new historical trail.

But it looks quite doable for experienced wilderness hikers independently.

Start planning your future adventure. First you have to get there …
