a new Kloofing video

Kloofing is an adventure activity that typically involves the descent of a deep ravine or watercourse that may be dry or wet. The defining factor is usually that the ravine is several times deeper than it is wide. All manner of walking, scrambling, climbing, swimming, plunging, jumping, bumslides or abseiling (rappelling) could be involved.

A kloofing trip usually combines hiking with the descent of a watercourse. Some of the more “interesting” kloofing involves long abseils or high jumps into pools from varying heights, up to as high as 20 or more metres (for example the popular ‘Suicide Gorge‘ in South Africa). …

with Fedak in Tuolumne Canyon

16.5 miles and 2700 foot gain down into the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River.

… For three miles, the Tuolumne River curves lazily through meadows like a time-lapse video of a cat on a sunny windowsill. Then it perks up and dashes over a series of cascades and waterfalls, terminating at Glen Aulin …

Yosemite Hikes – Glen Aulin (Tuolumne Falls & White Cascade)

John Fedak, resident of the Sierra Nevada mountains for the Summer season, led me on this, one of his favourite hikes.

Here’s John’s photo trip report of our day — LeConte Falls 2012.

We rendezvoused at Lembert Dome trailhead on the Tioga Road. This was the shortest winter snow closure for Tioga on record, by the way.

Tuolumne Meadows

On a Saturday in July the trail was busy. We even shared the bridge with these beasts.

In the Spring, it’s great for waterfalls. Later in the season, popular for swimming.

Thank you kindly for sharing this trail, John. It was a terrific day.

Fedak is one of the original hiking photo bloggers. He has thousands of annotated photos from his many, many adventures.

Check those out at Fedak.net

More of my own pics from this glorious day are posted on Flickr.

10 beautiful waterfalls

… It’s difficult making a choice when it comes to narrow it down to just 10 when there are so many beautiful ones out there, however below are some of the best …

California through his lens

California Through My Lens is dedicated to the “great state of California and the wonderful beauty it has to offer to the photographer and traveler“.

It’s well done. I’ve just subscribed.

Check out some hiking trip reports. For example, Heart Rock Waterfall in Crestline, CA:

… the true draw of this hike is the fact that the waterfall has an almost perfect cut out of a heart right alongside of it. The heart itself looks small in the photos, but could easily hold two adults in each of its halves. This is a little gem nestled in the San Bernardo mountains that I recently stumbled upon on world of waterfalls but had never heard of even after I had lived in this area of CA for my whole life. …

Amazon Waterfalls Association hike

Charles Motley sends news of a new trek to some of the highest waterfalls in the world. It’s in northern Peru and could be visited in conjunction with a visit to Machu Picchu north, the fortress of Kuelap.

Gocta Cataracts … Spanish: Catarata del Gocta) is a perennial waterfall with two drops located in Peru’s province of Chachapoyas in Amazonas, approximately 700 kilometres (430 mi) to the northeast of Lima. …

Although the waterfall had been well-known to locals for centuries (it is in full view of a nearby village), its existence was not made known to the world until after an expedition made in 2005 by a German, Stefan Ziemendorff, with a group of Peruvian explorers. …

On 13 March 2006, the Peruvian government announced to the press … that the area surrounding the falls would be developed as a tourist attraction … A small hotel was built 6-miles from the base of the waterfall, with all rooms having views of the waterfall. Tourists can now hike the trails by foot or horse to the misty base of the waterfall. The nearby town of Chachapoyas is located at an altitude of 2235 meters (7657 ft).

There are other waterfalls, one perhaps even higher.

Here’s a link to a guided adventure:

… a 2-day trek of about 10 km with a night half way along the trail. This is limited to no more than 12 people and one group starting daily.

Charles tells that there’s also a one day hike offered. The cost is only about $3. Visit this new attraction as soon as possible, as the north of Peru is bound to become increasingly popular in future.

Gullfoss (Golden Falls) Iceland

trip report by site editor Rick McCharles

Of the many wonderful waterfalls of Iceland, these were the most impressive I saw.

They seem to suddenly disappear into the earth.

Gullfoss (English: Golden Falls) is a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.

Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvítá rushes southward. About a kilometer above the falls it turns sharply to the left and flows down into a wide curved three-step “staircase” and then abruptly plunges in two stages …

This is early season, yet the observation deck already seems near the breaking point.

I hiked down the river a ways to take in the vista from more of a distance.

See the rest of my Gullfoss photos.

… there is another must see attraction near Gullfoss, the original Geysir. You can skip it. Go to Yellowstone, instead.

Iceland waterfall Skógafoss

Skógafoss (pronounced [ˈskou.aˌfɔs]) is a waterfall situated in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward … the former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.

It’s difficult to take a bad photo of these falls on a nice day.

See the birds nesting on the cliff walls.

… Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. …

See the rest of my Skógafoss photos.

… At the eastern side of the waterfall, a hiking and trekking trail leads up to the pass Fimmvörðuháls between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. It goes down to Þórsmörk on the other side and continues as the famous Laugavegur to Landmannalaugar.

Sob. That’s the trek I came to Iceland to complete. But a harsh Spring resulted in it opening too late for me. … I’ll have to return to Iceland another time.

#1 best hiking town in the world

Queenstown, New Zealand

The Adventure Capital of the World, a gorgeous location on Lake Wakatipu opposite the saw-toothed Remarkable range.

If you’ve never been to New Zealand, start planning. Now. It’s our #1 hiking destination on Earth.

Queenstown is an international resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand’s South Island. …

According to the 2006 census, the usually resident population of the Queenstown urban area … is 10,416 …

… a centre for adventure tourism. Skiing, jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking, tramping and fly fishing are all strong promotional themes. …

Queenstown is the departure point for a large number of day trips to the similarly famous Milford Sound …

More interesting photos tagged Queenstown.

If you find it too much of a tourist trap, move away up the lake to Te Anau (pop. about 2000). It’s got everything you need to stage for an epic Kiwi hike.

Our favourite hike hikes out of Queenstown and Te Anau are:

Milford Track
• Routeburn Track
• Kepler Track

These are the three on the list of Great Walks. (Kiwis avoid them because they’re crowded with international tourists. Locals can take you on hikes just as good, but unknown to foreigners.)

UPDATE – Trip Report by Tim Miner:

Absolutely, the best hiking experience I have ever had! Waterfalls, steep canyons, caves, mules, did I say waterfalls! The Havasupai Indian Reservation is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park, but you cannot tell that from the scenery. From your very first step at the trailhead parking lot until your return at the end of your trip, you will be swiveling your head side to side to take it all in. …
