The Trail – Ray Anderson

Paul Leroux is a serial killer wanted for murdering women in North Carolina. When the police start to catch up with Leroux, he panics and decides to escape to Canada on the Appalachian Trail, where thru-hikers use trail names and travel anonymously.
Leroux, who is overweight and unhealthy, struggles at first on the trail but begins to relax as he gets stronger and can utilize the physical changes he gains from his intense hiking as a disguise. His urge to kill, however, is invigorated by the nearness of female hikers, and his intention to stay away from them on his trip begins to weaken.
His life is further complicated when Desert Storm veteran Karl Bergman, who is also trying to escape his own failure, becomes suspicious of Leroux and begins to pay careful attention to his every move.
Leroux becomes increasingly panicked as he realizes that both Bergman and the police are close on his tail as he races to the border hoping to find a haven with his Canadian family. In this cat-and-mouse thriller, Ray Anderson dives inside two men’s minds as they struggle to fight their identities and confront their fears and internal turmoil.
Ray Anderson is a thru hiker who goes by the name Hamlet. He was inspired to write this book on a dark, stormy night while walking the Appalachian Trail in 2003.

Copper Canyon Traverse, Mexico
In 2013 Justin “Trauma” Lichter and Cam “Swami” Honan completed a 381 mile (613 km) traverse of Mexico´s Copper Canyon region. A first thru hike.
The traverse was a combination of hiking, packrafting, swimming, bushwhacking, scrambling, crawling and weaving our way around clandestine drug fields.
Our route linked together the six major canyons (along with numerous minor ones) that constitute the Copper Canyon region. It took us from the region’s northwest corner (Basaseachi Falls) to its southeastern limits (Sinforosa Canyon). In the order in which they were traversed, the canyons were as follows:

Oteros
Copper
Urique
Batopilas
Sinforosa

Steve Fugate approaches 40,000 miles
Steve Fugate of Vero Beach, Florida, walked into the Cheraw town limits at 12:36 p.m. May 13, braving the 82-degree heat. The large sign on his back — which reads “love life” in red capital letters — made him easy to spot. …
Crossing the state line marked a milestone for Fugate as South Carolina is the final state in his trek through each of the lower 48, ending his cross-country walk two years, one month and 20 days after it began on March 23, 2013. …
Fugate said this is his eighth time making the journey, and that he has walked 39,000 miles he said he expects to walk his 40,000th mile somewhere in South Carolina. …
Fugate said he started these walks in 1999 after losing his son, 26-year-old Stevie, to suicide while walking the Appalachian Trail. Six years later tragedy struck again when Fugate’s daughter, 36-year-old Shelly, died from an accidental drug overdose.
Fugate said he carries the sign on his back to remind people to love and appreciate their lives. …

Chris Townsend walked the PCT over 30 years ago. Back then the trail was a reality but it was nowhere near as popular as it is today. I think the year Chris hiked it only 11 people completed it. It has taken 30 years for Chris to produce this book and it seems he only embarked on the task after encouragement from his new publishers, Sandstone Press. Sandstone should take a bow as this is a very fine book indeed. …
… what makes this a joy to read is the sharing of Chris’ discovery of life on a trail like this, the beauty of the desert, the joys of the high mountains, the fascinating variety of the forests and the glorious wildcamps along the way. I wish I could describe this all a bit more eloquently but you’ll just have to go and read the book! …
