best lightweight headlamp?

I’ve decided on the Princeton Tec Byte Headlamp. $20 cheap. Claims 35 Lumens. 2.25oz including the easily replaceable 2 AAA batteries.

_____ original post from Aug. 10th:

The other day I was mocked by Adventure Racers for calling my wimpy Petzl a “headlamp”:

… only good for reading in the tent!

Actually, that’s all I use a headlamp for while on the trail.

Any recommendations for something with more lumens? Something (still lightweight) that would be useful in scrambling mountainsides in the dark?

Here are some recommendations from Backpacker in 2010:

Lightest & Cheapest
Coast LED Lenser Micro Headlamp

Steady Burner
Mammut Lucido TXlite Headlamp

Best Light Quality
Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp

Brightest
Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Best All-Around
Princeton Tec Remix Headlamp

ski up hill – skizee

I saw this on TrailsNet.com.

Skizee:

… It is like a ski – snowboard – skateboard version of the Ridekick. Whereas the Ridekick is a self-propulsion system for bikes, the Skizee does the same thing for skis. …

Black Diamond Ultra Distance Z-Poles

I used (and very much appreciated) a set of Z-Poles the other day. Dave Adlard let me try them out.

Long a critic of hiking canes, I think I’m finally won over to getting a set.

Backpacker calls this version the “best carbon poles we’ve ever tested“.

my new Out There AS-1 backpack

$189 is the cost of the best all-around adventure pack on the market right now.

I got mine yesterday from Mike Kloser himself. He packed it for me. Adjusted it for me. … And then made me chase him around the mountains of north Idaho for 12hrs continuous to test it.

The pack did great. I’m a wee bit exhausted.

AS-1 REVIEW by Nathan Fa’avae

I have spent in excess of 1000-days in the mountains and back country with a pack on my back, either racing, working or just pure adventure.

The AS-1 is by far the most comfortable and functional and pack I have used, a true testament to technology and innovation.

A major requirement I have is any pack I’m going to carry especially through an epic expedition race, needs to be lightweight yet still robust, the AS-1 meets both those needs.

My favourite aspect of the AS-1 is the 5-course menu of features, exceptionally convenient, multiple and productive functionality.

The AS-1 pack performs at the highest level, right where I aim to be when competing.

I used the AS-1 pack at the 2010 Adventure Racing World Championships, after 104-hours with the pack on my back, after it carried my gear, food and liquid for over 500-miles, I couldn’t fault it.

Out There USA

There are too many features to list. Watch the video on the site if you might be interested in getting one for yourself.

For pure hiking I’ll stick with my minimalist Granite Gear inflatable frame pack, but for any trip requiring “toys”, I’ll be using the AS-1.

Compression socks for hiking

Speed-hiker extraordinaire Jennifer Pharr Davis this weekend set a new overall thru-hike record on the 2,181-mile Appalachian Trail. Her time of 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes, is the quickest recorded completion of the iconic East Coast trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. …

Note that she wore compression socks for some of her (average) 50mi days.

I love frameless Backpacks

Sitting beside me in the airport is my Granite Gear Virga ($110), the frameless pack I’ve been using for the last number of years. I’ve no plans to switch anytime soon.

The “frame” is a standard 3/4 short therm-a-rest mattress.

Manufacturers of Frameless Backpacks include:

Gossamer Gear
Six Moons Design
Golite
ULA Equipment
Granite Gear
Osprey
Fanatic Fringe
Mountain Laurel Designs
Moonbow Gear

Don’t knock them until you’ve tried one. For me personally, the “suspension” system packs still have pressure points. Frameless are much more comfortable.

Didn’t get the best price:

Camera, extra battery, case, 3yr warranty (yes) … CDN $560 + tax.

Should be some cool apps for that location metadata.

mildew and tents

1. Grab a bottle of McNett Mirazyme.

Mix about a half-ounce into a gallon of water and use a nylon-bristled vegetable brush to scrub the gross spots. (If mildew plagues your whole tent, dissolve a full ounce of Mirazyme into a bathtub and scrub down the whole thing.

2. Set the tent up outside in the shade to let it dry.

3. Now mix 1 cup concentrated lemon juice (the type that comes in those little plastic lemons), 1 cup of table salt, and a gallon of hot water. Use a sponge to bathe the whole tent. Then let it dry thoroughly before packing.

Ultralighter than Thou

Ryan Jordan:

Ultralight, simplicity, minimalism – these are not the goals.

So you get your pack weight down to five pounds, your possessions down to a count of 99, and your debt down to zero.

So what.

Now what?

Shouldn’t “going ultralight” be a prerequisite for some sort of greater end? I’ve read all the minimalist books, and followed all of the minimalist bloggers, and most of them seem pretty confused about the role that minimalism should play in their lives, and in the betterment of the world. …

… I post this photo assuming some of those are Granite Gear packs, my choice too. … We’re cooler than you, I’m just saying. 🙂
