moving the besthike database?

For years I’ve been wanting to move our list of the best hikes in the world to a wiki.

Currently it’s locked up in software called GoLive, defunct for years.

Yet every time I research the state of the art wikis, I’m disappointed.

We don’t need much:

• WYSIWYG easy page editing for ‘normal’ people
hosted
• good security

As a fall back plan, I’m currently trying to move it to Google Sites.

February Florida Hiking Trails Month

Governor Charlie Crist declared February Florida Hiking Trails Month.

I’ve been shopping (unsuccessfully) for a cheap flight Calgary to Hawaii. … But I may need to change my focus to the Sunshine State.

The best starting place in deciding where to go is the Florida Hikes blog and FloridaHikes.com.

I know what you’re thinking. Florida is pretty flat.

But there are some wilderness attractions.

MORE top 10 hiking towns worldwide?

by besthike editor Rick McCharles

I posted our top 10 hiking towns worldwide based on some quite vague criteria.

top 10 hiking towns in the world

) Queenstown, New Zealand
) Huaraz, Peru
#3) Namche Bazaar, Nepal
#4) Cortina, Italy
) Chamonix, France
#6) Banff and Canmore, Canada
) Grindelwald, Switzerland
#8) El Calafate & El Chaltén, Argentina
#9) Zermatt, Switzerland
10) Moab, Utah

I’ve personally hiked out of all 10 of those great towns in recent years. But there might be others just as good … or better.

Of those 10, El Calafate and Moab are the two that might be replaced.

David suggests Sun Valley / Ketchum, Idaho. Mark recommends Springdale, Utah, just outside Zion National Park.

The USA has the best hiking in the world, under represented on our list of top 10 towns.

But what’s a hiking town USA better than Moab?

My first pick is Yosemite Village. Wonderful … but is it really a “town”?

Yosemite

Almost nobody would dispute Banff / Canmore on the list. But I personally prefer Waterton townsite. It’s a true town compared with Yosemite.

Waterton National Park 2009

In fact, it would be the town on my personal list.

Waterton

I’ve never hiked the N.E. USA. … What about Lake Placid or Keene, New York?

In Argentina you can make a good argument for Bariloche. You can take a city bus to some of the best hiking in South America.

There must be more good candidates. Leave a comment if you have a suggestion.

That list is not carved in stone. … Yet.

top 10 hiking towns worldwide

Lets say you want to plan a hiking holiday.

U.K. hikers

You might need to base yourself close to major trailheads. In a community with a good gear shop. Large enough to supply last minute provisions.

Mt. Whitney

You’ll need a memorable place to stay. A place that will store your bag while you’re gone out on the trail.

IMGA0471

The best hiking towns have a hiking culture. They appreciate and respect those on foot with a backpack.

Hikers Crossing

And you’ll want a memorable restaurant to celebrate on your return.

Ichiban Okazuya restaurant, Maui

Starting tomorrow we’ll be announcing our top 10 hiking towns with . And posting one each day until Christmas morning.

best hikes Oregon

Larry Cloud of cloud9northwest.com has some recommendations:

1. Best view – Cape Lookout on the Oregon Coast, hands down. Only problem is, to get that awesome view, the weather has to cooperate. Its often cloudy/rainy there, so I’d say the Cape Lookout hike needs to be done in July or August.

2. Best workout – Larch Mountain Crater Loop – you can actually start this down at Multnomah Falls Lodge on the Columbia River and climb 12 miles up the gorge wall to the top of Larch Mountain (we haven’t done this yet though).

3. Best family hike (if you want to bring kids) – I’d say probably the Triangulation Peak Hike is the least difficult and safest.

4. Best waterfalls – Silver Falls State Park. 11 majestic waterfalls within an 8 mile circle. Runner-up would be Ramona Falls. (note: his wife, Ramona, likes Ramona Falls best)

5. Best view of the Columbia River (separates Oregon from Washington) – Beacon Rock. Short but tough climb (no gear required).

6. Most unique – Drift Creek Falls – suspension bridge overlooks beautiful waterfall. Fairly easy hike in (mostly downhill).

Hiking in San Francisco

Alex Genadinik launched a new website in September – Hiking in San Francisco.

He wants to offer a free, personable, and simple way to organize and join hikes in the Bay area. Unique is a carpool feature available once you join a hike.

Check it out. And send feedback to Alex if you have any questions or suggestions.

Tom Mangan – Table Rock and The Chimneys, Linville Gorge Wilderness

I haven’t linked to Tom in, like, forever. … It’s as if I’m biased against trails out East, where he’s relocated.

Let’s make up for that oversight right now.

This is a can’t-miss hike if the weather cooperates. Table Rock, the stone uplift that forms the Linville Gorge’s most prominent peak, has amazing vistas at the top. About a mile and a half south, the Mountains to Sea Trail skirts the ragged ridge of The Chimneys, one of the most impressive assortments of rock formations in a gorge full of them. …

Mark Moxon – London Tube 500mi walk

Mark Moxon launched his excellent Long Distance Walks site in December 2003.

It was one of my earliest inspirations as a hiking blogger.

He’s done many amazing trips. But the most amazing yet is this one:

Mark Moxon:

In summer 2008, I spent three months walking the entire London Underground network, overground. This is the story of that walk, along with over 9700 photographs, route maps, points of interest and tips for those looking for a different way to explore London on foot. …

Wow !!

And he loved it.

scrambling Kelsey Peak, Utah

A new blog, HIKING SALT LAKE, has a great, modern look and feel.

The editor, Jonathan Wood, got lost in the Oquirrh Mountains, quite an ordeal.

Three weeks later he returned to the same area, to prove he’s up to the big scrambles in that area. The only one he could convince to come along was his dog, Suki.

I planned to do a few things different from last time. First, I would hit a different peak, Kelsey Peak, which is right next to the one I hit before but maybe a hundred feet higher (it’s one of the highest peaks in the Oquirrh Mountains). Second, I would park closer the trail so I didn’t waste time walking before starting the climb. And, third, I wasn’t going to get lost! …

to see if he and Suki made it down, read on … Kelsey Peak, Butterfield Canyon
