I pick up my rent-a-car today. Seven days circle touring the island in search of the best day hikes.
I’m staying in hostels, en route.
On my return I’ll immediately head out to Landmannalaugar for 4-5 days back country.
Leave a comment if you’ve any advice on best hikes Iceland.
This is my first visit.

It’s been a few years, but one of my favorite hikes was in Akureryi. You walk down some city streets, past the “dump”, and up into the mountains. Really beautiful. There’s a hut at the end of the hike — ask around and someone will probably be able to point you in the right direction.
Also I really enjoyed hiking in Skaftafell National Park.
There’s lots of beautiful scenery in Iceland that doesn’t involve hiking, too. My favorites were the Kjoler Road across the interior from Akureyri to Reykjavik, the Westmann Islands, and the Krafla geothermal area near Myvatn.
Enjoy!
Thanks Jim.
My rent-a-car is not allowed into the interior.
NEXT time I’ll dedicate the trip there.
I’m hiking Iceland in less than a month, so I can’t wait to hear more about your trip. Best of luck!
So far. WONDERFUL.
But it is very windy.
I’m still planning on what to do on my two weeks in Iceland next month, so really curious about your posts.
Cheers
They are coming. … I’m quite happy to have spent one week circling the island on the ring road, Highway #1.
