  1. MK is “idiosyncratic” at the minimum; “(fill in the blank)” to others. He always lists his own times for hikes, which are fast; the NPS gets tired of rescuing people who believe his estimates. All route descriptions are the minimum required to get it done. I actually like his personal, bare-boned style. Mostly, he opened myself and many others up to the hidden treasures of the CP. Half of what is in his tomes does not exist anywhere else. The guy is indefatigable.

  2. Agreed! Some of his ideas are amusingly crazy (he suggests swimming the Colorado with your pack on an air mattress to get access to the Maze area of Canyonlands!), others might get you into trouble if you just had his minimal descriptions and weren’t already experienced. But he also describes loads of hikes into canyons that aren’t technical or dangerous, that you won’t find in other guidebooks. So it’s a great resource for ideas, best followed up by searching for other descriptions / better maps etc.
