disappointed by Greg Mortenson

If you saw the 60 Minutes piece (VIDEO) on author Greg Mortenson, you’ll be saddened and disappointed too.

… Krakauer, and others, say that Mortenson has embellished some of the details of his story to make them sound more dramatic and impressive. That some of the things he claims happened to him in his books are, at best, stretches of the truth, and at worst, outright fabrications.

There are even some indications that the funds that are raised by CAI are not being spent properly and that the organization lacks transparency in how it operates. …

I’m not at all convinced by Greg’s response to the charge as published by Outside – Greg Mortenson Speaks

Greg Mortenson is finished. What a setback to a great cause.

  1. I’m so sorry that so many people have been disappointed to have their very high opinion of Greg Mortenson destroyed. I read his book a few months ago and I took from the book that he was a very simple young man whose passion was all for climbing and whose heart was touched by the needs of the people who serviced the climbers. I fully believe that the book was embellished and I have to say that I believe it was embellished by the co-writer, who would have had much more experience and also the power of forcing concessions as to how the tale was told. That is just how I see it, and who is to say that is not as likely an explanation as any other. Does it not sometimes hurt your heart, readers, to see how heavily and immediately the public and especially the media, falls upon the person who is disgraced. I hope some of you will take a breath and think out for yourselves some possible explanations that don’t necessitate damning this man.

  2. Good comments. This is a great cause, and Greg has done great work … and is a pathological liar. It’s possible he is so blinded by the lights, he can no longer distinguish between deceit and reality.

Jon’s research is exhaustive and impeccable as always – http://www.byliner.com/ – it simply cannot be doubted.

One hopes as Jon does at the end of his piece, that a new CAI Board can continue the good work, but that can only happen if Greg is moved into a figurehead position, and the strong and transparent financial oversight required of non-profits is implemented.

  3. His book was translated into Bulgarian and issued a few monhts ago and it is probably one of the most inspiring books I’ve red recently…

  4. Me as well Rick… Some folks’ intentions may begin well, but that damn ego often gets them off course.
I think I’ll just go back and enjoy some more of your poetry.

  5. I think the accountant on 60 minutes embellished his accusations. He didn’t take into account exchange rates when he accused Greg of spending more in the U.S. than he did in Pakistan. That’s kind of a huge mistake.
