hikingboots.com posted videos of what they call the 5 Most Gut-Wrenching Hikes on Earth:
1. Michielli Strobel, Italy
2. El Camino del Rey, Spain
3. Roche Veyrand, France
4. Lukerbad, Switzerland
5. Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia (3800m)
The via ferrata videos are scary. But nothing tops El Camino. I cannot believe that hikers are allowed on it !!
Click PLAY or go watch El Camino del Rey on YouTube in high definition 480p.

I hate to be such a stickler, but via ferrata’s aren’t “hikes” since they require technical equipment. It isn’t “climbing” either; I believe they are their own tiny category.
However, I love via ferrata’s, this is an outstanding selection, esp that Swiss route, so I hope to refer back to this sometime.
Two notes:
“But nothing tops El Camino. I cannot believe that hikers are allowed on it !” I thought the exact same thing, so looked it up: they officially closed that route in 2000 – as I sure would have done – but people still commonly do it, mostly climbers on their way to a climbing area.
Kinabalu (the 5th video) has an annual running race up it; a friend of mine won the Female division 3 times.
