In Cusco, all hikers visit the South American Explorers clubhouse.
Guys like me hang out there half the day reading trip reports and hearing the buzz on what’s happening on different trails as members stop by. It’s very welcoming.

details – Idealist – Cusco Clubhouse Manager

Agreed – SAE is great. Very few backpackers (as in young travelers) or tourists have even heard of it. Wish now I had taken Spanish in school!
Sadly I never got to check the cusco one out – as I went to the Lima one and they were absolutely useless. Really badly out of date trip reports, poorly filed, and they weren’t particularly welcoming, and gave me no advice whatsoever about the treks I was considering.
Cusco is far better. Lima is more geared for “travel”, not hiking. … But they did store my bag for me. And I met some cool people there.
