Last year when I trekked the Khumbu I was super impressed to be able to get internet close to base camp. I was able to post photos of myself, near naked. The connection at guest houses was slow and expensive, however.
Now you can post rude Everest pics right from your smart phone:
Nepali mobile network operator Ncell has installed the first 3G base station at the summit of Mount Everest, giving visitors, climbers and people living in the Khumbu Valley the ability to make calls and wirelessly connect to the Internet. …
… “The coverage of the network will reach up to the peak of the Everest,” Ncell Nepal chief Pasi Koistinen said to reporters in Kathmandu on Thursday. …
Even from your parachute.

When will the first tweet from the summit be? Someone will be racing for that everest first!
We can’t resist change, but we can resent it. No?

I smiled at Andrew’s distinction above.
However, on reflection, cell service on Everest probably makes sense. Base Camp is literally a business operation. Some people are paying $70k to be there. Might as well call a spade a spade.
Next time I go, which as always will be as an independent. I won’t be carrying a phone (because of the weight), so this won’t matter to me. Well maybe it will: I’ll be begging some wealthy client for a minute’s use of their phone so I can call my kids!
It is great that the valley gets a better coverage!
