fear the Henry Mountains, Utah

These black, bleak peaks looming over 8000ft above the surrounding deserts are out-of-place.

Remote. Barren. Inaccessible.

Nobody lives there, aside from American bison. And that was by forced relocation. Poor beasts.

The Bureau of Land Management do not make regular patrols. Too dangerous, I assume.

… The Henry Mountains were the last mountain range to be added to the map of the 48 contiguous U.S. states (1872), and before their official naming …, sometimes referred to as the “Unknown Mountains.” …

One hiker dared climb, Bob Palin. Read his photo trip report: Hiking Mount Ellen

  1. We drove some of this area last week, we were well prepared and knew what we were doing, but the remoteness of the area and the fact that we saw nobody else in the whole time we were there was a little disconcerting. Trails are marked (sort of) so take a GPS so you can find your way out if you get a little lost like we did one or twice. And tell someone where you are heading, and what time you intend getting back as there is no cell phone reception at all….

  2. I just discovered this page with the link to my trip report – thanks! I haven’t been back to the summit since that day though I have driven the dirt roads around the peaks several times. I intend to explore the top again this summer.
