By far the best source of information on hiking in Southern California is Modern Hiker.
And just possibly the best trip reports on-line anywhere. Here’s the perfect example post:

It’s far more detailed than any hiking guidebook.

I’ve been reading MH for months and it’s by far my favorite hiking blog. I don’t know how the team over there can do it all, but they do, every time out.
