Ranking New Zealand’s Great Walks

New Zealand is our #1 hiking destination in the world.

All the Great Walks are recommended.

Ben Gatting who lives in Queensland hiked them back-to-back to put together this article using three main criteria:

  • Admin/Logistics
  • Infrastructure
  • Scenery/Experience/X-factor

Paparoa is the most recent addition. Ben ranks it best.

  1. Paparoa Trail
  2. Tongariro Northern Circuit
  3. Routeburn Track
  4. Abel Tasman Coastal Track
  5. Kepler Track
  6. Hump Ridge Track
  7. Milford Track
  8. Whanganui Journey (canoe/kayak)
  9. Lake Waikaremoana
  10. Heaphy Track
  11. Rakiura Track

I’ve done 4 of those myself. All excellent.

We ranked Tongariro Northern Circuit best. And named it one of the top 10 hikes in the world.

All 11 of New Zealand’s Great Walks, ranked from worst to best

Elk Falls, Campbell River, Vancouver Island

Trip report by BestHike editor Rick McCharles.

The day hike on AllTrails out of Campbell River is Elk Falls via Millenium Trail.

  • up to 7.2 km return
  • up to 262m elevation gain
  • family friendly
  • excellent trail maintenance

Elk Falls are spectacular. But be warned there’s a lot of construction nearby in 2025 and for years to come.

The suspension bridge has great views down into the canyon.

Old growth forest is always a joy to walk.

About 200,000 visit each year. Free parking in a Provincial Park.

Trail maintenance is excellent.

Surprisingly, you can legally walk right to the edge of the falls.

Knox Mountain via Apex Trail, Kelowna, Canada

Visiting friends in Kelowna, I saw the Apex Trail listed #1 for the city on AllTrails.

  • 4.2km return
  • 267m elevation gain

It is super popular with walkers, runners, and mountain bike cyclists.

My friends there walk trails on Knox Mountain every day of the year.

Steep trails lead to great views of both Kelowna and Okanagan lake.

Hiking Town – Queenstown, New Zealand

Queenstown, New Zealand.  YES!

The Adventure Capital of the World, a gorgeous location on Lake Wakatipu opposite the saw-toothed Remarkable range.

If you’ve never been to New Zealand, start planning. Now. It’s our #1 hiking destination on Earth.

Queenstown is an international resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand’s South Island. …

According to the 2006 census, the usually resident population of the Queenstown urban area … is 10,416 …

… a centre for adventure tourism. Skiing, jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking, tramping and fly fishing are all strong promotional themes. …

Queenstown is the departure point for a large number of day trips to the similarly famous Milford Sound …

More interesting photos tagged Queenstown.

If you find it too much of a tourist trap, move away up the lake to Te Anau (pop. about 2000). It’s got everything you need to stage for an epic Kiwi hike.

Our favourite hike hikes out of Queenstown and Te Anau are:

Milford Track
• Routeburn Track
• Kepler Track

These are the three on the list of Great Walks. (Kiwis avoid them because they’re crowded with international tourists. Locals can take you on hikes just as good, but unknown to foreigners.)

on the Milford Track
on the Kepler Track

More “best hikes” in New Zealand and Australiasia.

Best months for these alpine tramps are December – March.

Ausangate Trek, Peru – Guided

This site features the best independent hikes.

And we did hike our #1 trek in South America independently in 2005.

It wasn’t easy.

Adam and Kathryn signed on for a guided trek with AB Expeditions — and were VERY happy with the experience.
