Skรณgafoss Waterfall Way, Iceland

Trip report by BestHike editor Rick McCharles

I’ve seen most of the famous waterfalls of the world โ€” and cannot recall a better series of falls anywhere.

Skรณgafoss is massive. Powerful.

width 25 metres (82 feet) and drop of 60 m (200 ft).

The Skรณgafoss Waterfall hike (also called the Skรณgรก Trail or Waterfall Way) is one of Icelandโ€™s most spectacular easy walks. Perhaps 25 waterfalls and spectacular canyons.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

This trail starts at massive Skรณgafoss and follows the Skรณgรก River upstream for 8 km (5 miles). If you reach the bridge, I’d say you’ve gone too far. ๐Ÿ˜€

In fact, hike as far as you want. Turn back when you like.

Elevation Gain: 500 meters

I waited about 5 days for a good weather window โ€” and it was worth it. I even had some sunshine.

I hiked the waterfalls up and down twice over 3 days. Going early morning and late evening to minimize the number of other hikers on the trail.

The trailhead is at Skรณgar on the Ring Road (highway 1). There is a campground and hotels. Book well in advance.

Earth Trekkers posted an excellent trip report.

Skรณgafoss is also the start / finish of the challenging Fimmvรถrรฐuhรกls trail which ends at Thรณrsmรถrk. In good weather you can do the entire 22 kilometres (14 mi), 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) of climbing in a long day. It crosses a glacier between two recently active volcanoes โ€” which you can also climb.

Of course Thรณrsmรถrk is the start / finish of the most famous hike in Iceland, the Laugavegur. If you have 4-6 days, the BEST hike is Landmannalaugar to Skรณgar. It includes the The Skรณgafoss Waterfall Way, connecting Fimmvรถrรฐuhรกls and Laugavegur.

I did the Laugevagur Trail as a YOYO in 2023.

My Hiking Gear 2024

I haven’t much changed my gear for overnight hiking over the past few years.

If it works, don’t fix it.

Biggest change is my photo / video equipment: phone, drone, and action camera.

I’m no ultralight hiker. ๐Ÿ˜€ For me the drone and two powerbanks are worth carrying.

My BestHike YouTube channel is high priority on these trips.

Below is a list I’d guesstimate to be 90% accurate for most trips. Of course I’d add food for the number of days needed.

I spend a lot of time on the B.C. coast. Love it.

Our #1 hike in the world is the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island.

Often I’m on First Nations Traditional Land. And I want to be respectful of each First Nations rules.

Ausangate Trek, Peru, without a Guide

Now that Nepal required you hire a guide for almost all high altitude treks, Peru might offer the easiest logistics for similar independent adventures.

Of many great options in Peru, we like the Ausangate Circuit best.โ€‚You can side trip to the Rainbow mountain, if you like.โ€ƒAnd nearby Red Valley.โ€‚AND Red Lake.

Megs from Wisconsin has traveled over 70 nations.โ€‚Here’s how she trekked Ausangate independently.

    • Mileage:ย Around 45 Miles, depending on route
    • Difficulty: Extremely Difficult
      • The Ausangate trek without a guide is extremely difficult due to the trailโ€™s remoteness, altitude, and being unmarked. Additionally, the weight of carrying all your gear and food for at least 5 days
      • This high-altitude trek in Peru never dips below 14,150 feet (4,000m)
      • The weather can change fast at this altitude and there are risks associated with doing the trek guided or not. NEVER HIKE ALONE
    • Duration:ย 5 โ€“ 7 Days

The most popular time to hike Ausangate is between the months of April to October. Peru has two main seasons,ย dry and rainy. In general,ย dry season is from May to October, while rainy season is fromย November until April. …

The altitude of the Ausangate trek is insane. Remember, this trek never drops below 14,000 feet!

Many of the passes are grueling and top out at over 16,000 feet. The mountains are Apus, or Gods, to the Indigenous, so go in with the mindset of respecting them. By the way, the mighty mountain of Ausangate is a staggering 20,945 feet (6,384 m).

    Acclimation is key …

TOP 10 Hiking Towns โž™ Grindelwald, Switzerland

I stayed in Grindelwald again in 2023. What a terrific hiking town.

Most hikers arrive by train from Interlaken. They share that journey with hundreds of thousands of camera clutching tourists all en route to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe.

Grindelwald is a municipality in the district of Interlaken in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The village is located at 1,034 metres (3,390 ft) above sea level in the Bernese Alps. …

Long famed as a winter tourist destination with slopes for beginners, intermediates and the challenges of the Eiger glacier for the experienced, there are activities for the non-skiers, from tobogganing to groomed winter hiking tracks. It is the usual starting point for ascents of the Eiger and the Wetterhorn. Nowadays Grindelwald is also a popular summer activity resort with many miles of hiking trails across the Alps. …

Grindelwald has a population (as of 2007) of 3,809 …

Many experienced hikers would pooh pooh Grindelwald as too touristy, basing themselves instead out of Lauterbrunnen, Mรผrren or even (our pick) tiny Gimmelwald, accessible only on foot or by aerial tramway.

There are no bad hikes out of Grindelwald. It is fantastic in every direction.

    vista from the Grindewald hostel

But the Tour of the Jungfrau Region, a 2wk ultimate adventure, is our best recommendation.

See more “best hikes” in the Alps.

The best day hike is the Eiger Trail.

Most hike June to mid-October but, surprisingly, there are trails open year round close to Grindelwald.
