Marjan Loop, Split, Croatia

Trip report by BestHike editor Rick McCharles

The best hike in Split, Croatia is the 8km Marjan Loop in the most popular park in town.

vista from Marjan Hill

Actually, there are many options in this park — and I deviated from the AllTrails version several times, getting scolded by my app for being off trail. 😀

Marjan hill (178 m (584 ft)) is a CLIMB. But there are great vistas in every direction.

5 Great DAY HIKES in Morocco

Markus Rosehill picked 5 different kinds of hiking environments in Morocco.

00:00 Intro

00:35 Best Coastal Hike

05:12 Best Summit Hike

13:31 Best Oasis Hike

20:14 Best Sahara Hike

24:43 Best Gorge Hike

Note. The video incorrectly mentions that Mt. Toubkal 4,167 m (13,671 ft) requires a guide. Not so. You can easily do it independently though it’s longer than an easy day hike. And altitude sickness is a big risk.

Rathtrevor Beach, Vancouver Island – 4 Seasons 🎵

Rathtrevor Beach near Nanaimo is the most popular Provincial Park on Vancouver Island.

I walk there most mornings at dawn, with coffee.

Year round.

The scenery is different every day.

At low tide, you can walk the ocean bottom nearly a kilometre out into the Straight of Georgia.

Longest Floating Boardwalk in the World

“At 3,300 feet (nearly 3/4 mile) long and 12 ft wide, the Coeur d’Alene Resort Floating Boardwalk is the longest floating boardwalk in the world and encircles the marina on Lake Coeur d’Alene,” the Road Trip America says.

Coeur d’Alene Resort … in the northwest United States, located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Seated on the north shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene by Tubbs Hill, the resort features a marina, convention facilities, spa, as well as a notable 18-hole golf course.

Free and open to the general public, walking laps around the resort is recommended.

Beware the Canada Geese. 😀

Sea Birds at the Pacific Herring Spawn

Dawn March 16, 2024 at Rathtrevor Beach, Vancouver Island.

Each spring, peaking in March, the Pacific Herring (Clupea harengus pallasi) return to protected inlets on the coast of British Columbia to spawn.

Female herring lay up to 20,000 eggs, which are fertilized when they are laid. On contact with water, the eggs become very sticky, and attach themselves to whatever they come into contact with.

The event draws thousands of marine birds and mammals to feed on the nutritious bounty.

Cape Wrath Trail, Scotland

I’m considering doing some hiking in Scotland, September 2024.

… But where to go?

Cape Wrath Trail is approximately 200 miles (321 km) in length and is considered to be one of the most challenging long distance walks in the UK. …

The trail begins in Fort William and ends at Cape Wrath lighthouse on the northwest tip of the Scottish mainland. …

Officially the trail is not endorsed by Scottish Natural Heritage and it is not waymarked or signposted.

Facilities along the trail are also minimal and it covers some of the remotest parts of mainland Britain. …

I’d do some section(s) of the Cape Wrath, if I can nail the logistics down.

Ideally it would be late in the season — after the midges have begun to disappear.

TOP 10 day hikes ➙ Reinebringen, Lofoten, Norway

One of our top 10 day hikes in the world

Why?

Reopened in 2019 with sherpa-built steps.

Now much safer and easier.

  • Reinebringen is on the island of Moskenesøya , one of the Lofoten islands in Norway, north of the Arctic Circle
  • infamous for wind and rainy weather
  • famed for dramatic scenery,  rugged peaks, open sea vistas past sheltered bays
  • about 448 meters (1470 feet) above sea level
  • over 1500 stone steps
  • about 2 hours up
  • It’s crowded. Over a thousand people a day in high season if the weather is good.
  • permits not required

World → Europe → Norway → Reinebringen, Lofoten

Of course BestHike editor Rick McCharles HAD to make a hero video of himself atop the famous vista. 😀
