Glacier North Circle in Montana is one of our top 10 hikes in the world. Even better if you add a side trip to Waterton National Park in Canada.

Of the many great American Rocky Mountain hikes, this is our favourite.

Taryn details how to get to some of these adventures without your own transportation. A nice touch.

Congratulations Laurent Berthod.
This is one of the most impressive hiking adventures in history.

Laurent Berthod spent 95 days hiking from Leh in India to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. The Canadian set out in October 2023. By January 2024, he had walked 2,600km, climbed 115,000m of elevation, and crossed 75 mountain passes. …
The first big challenge was planning his route. He linked existing trails from the Open Street Map database and newer trails found with the help of locals and survey maps in India. Experienced Himalaya ultrarunner Peter Van Geit helped Berthod to plan sections of his route. …

Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia
Hiking holidays in Peru are hot right now. More popular than ever. Political stability since the leader of the Shining Path terrorist group was captured in 1992 resulted in a booming tourist industry.
The second highest mountain range on Earth is fantastic. Broad valleys and endless vistas. You are always above the tree line. Arid desert to the west, Amazon jungle to the east.
Our contributors have hiked most of the major treks in Peru. The peaks, glaciers and canyons are outrageous. Everyone is thrilled with the Andes.
Unfortunately, management of treks is atrocious, the Peruvian government seemingly bent on ruining their fantastic tourist draw. Do your homework before booking a flight to Lima. Or sign on with a trekking company with which you have had a strong, recent recommendation.
The weather in the Andes can be deadly, of course, but sometimes you get weeks of sunny blue skies, especially in the Cordillera Blanca out of Huaraz, Peru. The best weather for the high peaks out of Huaraz (the best jumping off point for hikers in the Central Andes) is the drier “Andean summer”: May-Sept.
In fact, there are good hikes somewhere in this region year round.
More information on our new Central Andes information page.
Our favourite hike in the Central Andes is the Ausangate Circuit in Peru, our #4 best hike in the world. Quite a few trekkers have decided on Ausangate (instead of the over-hyped Inca Trail) based on our recommendation. And all have been happy with that decision.
See our Ausangate Circuit Information page.
The best guidebook for the Central Andes, by far, is (the now discontinued) Lonely Planet:
Note that Bolivia is not nearly as popular as it should be due to lack of infrastructure for tourism, security concerns and political instability.
Honestly, unless you know the language and culture well, it’s better to hike Peru. Or much neglected Ecuador.
Many feel this is the most beautiful of the Canadian Rockies trails.

World → N America → Rockies → Canada → Alpine Circuit, Lake O’Hara

Cerro Castillo is definitely one of the top hikes in Patagonia.
Access is comparatively easy, as well, via picturesque highway — the Carretera Austral.
Jumping off point the city of Coihaique, Chile.
Normal route is 62km (38.5mi) plus sidetrips.

Waqrapukara or Waqra Pukara (possibly from Quechua waqra horn, pukara fortress, “horn fortress”) is an archaeological site in Peru located in the Cusco Region …
It was declared a National Cultural Heritage Site by the Ministry of Culture in July 2017. The building is said to be an Inca sanctuary.
At 4,140 m (13,580 ft) you seriously need to be acclimatized to make the 10k trek roundtrip.
BBC posted a trip report.
Check Puyca Expeditions to see how you could be guided to the remote site.

January is peak season for Patagonia.
I wish I was on any of these adventures right now — rather than being stuck in Canada. 😀
That list is from Backpacker magazine. (Outdoor+ subscription required.)
El Calafate / El Chaltén Argentina is one of our top 10 hiking towns in the world.
Of that list, I’d say the Huemul Route is least well know.
