10 best treks in the world

… according to Lonely Planet:

1. GR20, France
2. Inca Trail, Peru
3. Pays Dogon, Mali
4. Everest Base Camp, Nepal
5. Indian Himalayas, India
6. Overland Track, Australia
7. Routeburn Track, New Zealand
8. The Narrows, USA
9. The Haute Route, France-Switzerland
10. Baltoro Glacier & K2, Pakistan

The two in bold are on our top 10 list.

I like the list, though “Indian Himalayas” is a region, not a trek.

Certainly there are better hikes in Peru than the Inca Trail, including Choquequirao to Machu Picchu.

  1. While I’m happy to read what’s popped into the mind of some LP editor (“Pays Dogon”?) they have left their field of expertise far behind. LP is good at listing, ad nauseum, every cheap eating and sleeping establishment in every town in every country of the world, but are itinerate outdoors people, and it shows.

“Indian Himalaya” is indeed a region, and a huge one at that, and the list then stretches from the K2 trek – usually done with porters as part of a multi-week project – to the Narrows, which is done by 1,000’s of Utah Boy Scouts each summer.

  2. My guess is that Lonely Plant means Gangotri National Park, Garhwal region, aka the Indian Himalayas. That is where Nanda Devi and Meru are for example. There are very few, if any, set or established routes. Not that I like arguing that LP got it right, but that might help explain the discrepency on the list.
