19yr-old killed by coyotes

What?

I’d never before heard of an attack on humans by coyotes, never mind a death.

This tragedy in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.

… Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Taylor Mitchell was “an old soul” despite her young age …

… Mitchell, hiking alone on the Skyline Trail, was attacked by coyotes Tuesday afternoon. According to park officials, other hikers nearby managed to scare off the animals and call 911. The singer was hospitalized in Cheticamp and later airlifted to Halifax, where she died at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. …

One article stated that the “eastern coyote that lives in the Cape Breton park has interbred with wolves and is somewhat larger than its western ancestors”.

  1. The first time I heard this, it was she was attacked by wolfs.

What I think, is what ever attacked her was interbreeding with domestic dogs. Supposedly wolfs and coyotes have a natural fear of humans but when they breed with domestic dogs you can get a viscous animal that isn’t afraid of humans.

That’s what I read somewhere. I believe it was becoming a problem in Portland’s Forest Park.

  2. Both wolves & coyotes are opportunistic animals. To think they’d never attack humans is a mistake. In New England, where I live, coyotes have gone after people while walking their dogs…not just gone after the dogs, but the owners. Same is true for fox. While they don’t generally prey on humans, it’s not out of their realm to attack a child or small animal. Their aggression is heightened when they are together in packs, or more than one. If the animals are hungry, and they believe they can kill a person, who’s to say they won’t?

I recently returned from a 5 week hike of the AT in Virginia. Several of the locals related incidents in which more than one coyote “trapped” an individual. One farmer climbed a tree when 2 coyotes chased him. He stayed in the tree for several hours, while the coyotes waited at the base of the tree, watching him. Here in MA, My girlfriend’s mom was cornered by 2 coyotes years ago when she was out walking, pushing a stroller, carrying one of her children. Though not very common, it’s not unheard of. Don’t think that a coyote that attacks humans is necessarily bred with wild or domestic dogs.
