Chomolhari Trek, Bhutan – more photos
An expensive guided trek to Bhutan would be great. But when will that country finally open to independent hikers?
I’d love to get to Bhutan myself the first year it opens.

Although Bhutan is not truly open for independent travellers, you can easily book a personal trek with a local trekking company. That will cost US$240/day, which includes all food, all accomodation, everything but the tips and booze. If you are 4+ people it is US$200/day. Sound expensive? try going to New York or London on less than that! Many go in groups, but enough people go alone. The company will provide a guide, cook, cook helper, yak herder and yak boy + ample yaks to carry everything. These guys add lots of local flavour to the trek, and you add money ito the local economy. Etho Metho, Yu-Druk, Lhomen trekking, Yangphel are examples of the largest local companies.
