WHY WE LIKE THIS HIKE

  • PERU, all things considered, offers the best alpine hiking in the world
  • circuit the highest peak in little visited Cordillera Central
  • lagoons, wildlife, birds
  • remote, few trekkers
  • good chance to meet local Quechua people
  • some of the best alpine weather in the world — even better than out of Huaraz or Cuzco
  • dry season May to September
  • good fishing in the nearby Alto Cañete River
  • travel in Peru for as little as US$20 / day

If you like Ticlla, you will definitely love Ausangate, Alpamayo and Huayhuash.

CONSIDERATIONS

Ticlla is recommended only for confident, self-sufficient hikers experienced at high altitude. Be ready for freezing wind and snow on your tent.

  • this is a difficult, challenging adventure
  • altitude sickness is a severe risk!
  • not much hiked, the trails are poor
  • evacuation is almost impossible

Route finding and scrambling is necessary if you try to do it independently.

LOGISTICS

If you sign on with a trekking company, they will arrange your logistics. No worries.

This section is geared for independent hikers.

We recommend the itinerary in The Andes - A Trekking Guide .

  • 78km (48.5mi)
  • 5-6 days
  • 2700m (8,858ft) ascent
  • highest elevation 5050m (16,568ft)
  • trailhead Miraflores 3650m (11,975ft)
  • alternate trailheads Ayaviri and Tanta
  • travel to the trailhead via the city of Huancayo for acclimatization
  • ... add a comment here

You can extend this circuit for 2-3 days around the massif via Vitis. Or do the shorter 2-3 day circuit recommended in the Bradt Trekking Guide .

INDEPENDENT OR GUIDED?

Carrying your own pack around the Circuit is risky.

Most hikers hire at least an arriero (mule driver) & pack animals to get them up to altitude. It should be easy to do this on your own in the village of Miraflores.

Hire your support for the first day or two — or for the entire trip. Remember you need to pay for the travel day(s) returning home.

Rates are fixed each year and will likely increase:

  • Guide - US$50 / day
  • Cook - US$23 / day
  • Mule driver - US$10 / day
  • Food - US$10 / person / day
  • Pack animal - US$5 / day

Do you know the current rates in Miraflores? If so, please email to update this section.
