April Fools ??
Demetri Coupounas, the president and co-founder of GoLite, is heading out on the Appalachian Trail attempting to break the World Alpine Style Backpacking Distance record — 620mi.
… He won’t exactly be “Going Light” however, as his total pack weight will be 127 pounds according to this post over at the Outside Blog where they’ve posted a brief interview with Demetri. Why is his pack so heavy you ask? Well, for one thing, he’s hoping to carry everything he needs for the 40 days on his back with him, including all of his food. That’s right, he’s going 40 days without a resupply. …

UPDATE: Seems “Coup” only lasted a few days, sending most of the massive load home from Neel’s Gap. Thanks FREDTERP. Related:

This article is pretty funny. But the sad thing is…my father-in-law used to backpack for 3 to 4 weeks at a time with no resupplies. He literally carried 100+ lbs on his back. He brought everything but the kitchen sink with him. Even a high-powered rifle!

Thanks FREDTERP.
And your suggestion we are western biased is valid, I’m afraid. Based in the Rockies seems to make one a “West is the Best”er.
Sorry about that.

Is there a link to a story on where he got off? I’d love to post an update on this as well and I haven’t been able to find it.
