When in Chile en route to hike Cerro Castillo and Paine, I made a special trip (ferry ride) to visit Park Pumalin. This is the audacious and controversial project of Douglas Tompkins— to protect the environment by buying it.
I love Park Pumalin and recommend to the many well-intentioned treehuggers out there that you pool your resources and start purchasing the wilderness you most want to save.
Now Tompkins is one of the prime movers in an even bigger project:

See a 13min promo video on YouTube narrated by Kris Tompkins.
Douglas Tompkins founded The North Face. His wife Kris Tompkins is the former CEO of Patagonia. (So all that gear you bought from them indirectly supported the cause.)

The big fight in Chile right now is between those who want to preserve the environment and the country’s largest energy utility, Endesa, which wants to build hydroelectric dams on the Baker and Pascua rivers. We’ll be watching this battle.
