start in Seattle and walk NORTH

July 21st, 2007 · No Comments

Married couple Erin McKittrick (Molecular Biologist turned jewelry artist) and Bretwood (Hig) Higman are incredible adventurers.
Where to begin …
Currently they are on a 9 month trip from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska by human power:
Journey on the Wild Coast will be an unprecedented four-thousand-mile expedition along the northern edge of […]

TV - Survivorman vs Man vs Wild

July 20th, 2007 · 7 Comments

My hiking buddies prefer the TV show Survivorman over Man vs Wild.
The Survivorman — Les Stroud — is believable.
In comparison, the Man vs Wild — Bear Grylls — is untrustworthy. Some of his “feats”, we suspect, are faked. (Aside from the fact he “survives” with a camera crew at the ready.)
Higgins of Mental […]

world’s most southerly trek - Isla Navarino

July 20th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Any arguments?
The Dientes Circuit is the most southerly track we can find listed in a hiking guidebook.
It’s in Patagonia, the jumping off point Puerto Williams, Chile.
From there you can circumambulate the jagged spires of Cordon de los Dientes with constant vistas as most of the route is above treeline.

Nick & Jenni felt it was […]

hike Carthew-Alderson, Waterton, Canada

July 17th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Waterton Lakes National Park is the best kept hiking secret in Canada. YOU can go — but let the non-hiking hordes jam the roadways of Banff and Jasper instead.
Contributors Kelly and Lexi (getting married Aug. 4th in the Yukon, by the way) raved about their 2006 Carthew-Alderson hike in Waterton. Based on their recommendation, […]

trek the remote Huayhuash Circuit in Peru

July 16th, 2007 · No Comments

I’m jealous.
Frequent contributor Eu-Jin Goh is just returned from 12 days hiking my personal favourite trek in the World.

… the Huayhuash circuit is the most spectacular extended hike that we’ve done so far.
There were four of us on the hike, Emily Rains, Ray Woo, together with Serene and I.
I had contacted Chris […]

video - closest black bear ever

July 15th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Just finishing the Wall Lake hike in Waterton, I commented to George: “We haven’t seen our bear yet today.”
(One time in Waterton National Park my hiking group had seen at least one bear a day. They are easy to spot here. One day we saw 5 bears.)
Right then a bear came strolling directly towards our […]

trek independently Choquequirao to Machu Picchu, Peru

July 14th, 2007 · No Comments

Jenni and Nick used our old Choquequirao hiking site while planning a trek to Aguas Calientes, the jumping off point for Machu Picchu.
Their trip report will be of great interest to others. We feel the very best way to walk to Machu Picchu is independently via the great ruins of Choquequirao, exactly what they […]

All-in-one Map Tool review

July 13th, 2007 · 3 Comments

It’s very rare for me to add any item to my “base” hiking kit. (It’s too heavy already.)
The new essential must be very valuable. Or very light.
The All-in-one Map Tool is both. I carry it with my map and compass.

Bob Moseley from Brooks-Range Mountaineering Equipment Co. asked me to test this award […]
