Northover Ridge, Kananaskis Country - Canadian Rockies

January 24th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Summit Stones & Adventure Musings recommends the Northover Continental Divide route in the Canadian Rockies.

They’ve hiked this ridge walk a number times, impressed by the spectacular views.

A quick Google search led me to the excellent Canadian Rockies Hiking website:

Kananaskis Country, referred to by locals as “K-Country” was formed in 1977. The area offers a multitude of landscapes and trails. It is home to a large variety of wildlife including wolves, grizzly and black bears, elk, moose, deer and big horn sheep. Northover Ridge is considered one of the best hikes in Kananaskis. The hike is just over 32 km (20 mi) long with an elevation gain of just over 1180 m (3871 ft). Our trip is usually completed in three days; day one to Three Isle Lake, day two to Aster Lake, and day three returning to the trailhead. Glaciers, wildflowers, alpine lakes, waterfalls, hanging valleys, and beautiful peaks make this a spectacular three-day trip.

I’ll be looking to give it a go myself in July or August.

    Northover is a great route!
Another suggestion for an amazing hiking experience in a very special area is the Alpine Circuit in Lake O’Hara. While Northover can be done in a day; it is a tough day out and really needs a longer time to appreciate the whole experience. The O’Hara Alpine Circuit can be done in a full, but much easier day out. It links the three O’Hara Alpine routes together - Wiwaxy Gap, Yukness Ledges, and All Souls.
It can be done from either end and we have enjoyed both. The valley views, the surrounding summits, the many lakes, are all beyond simple words…
The route is very well maintained and route finding is not an issue. You get a real high alpine feel out on it.
It’s a ‘Best Hike’ too we believe!
I’ve placed many a ‘Summit Stone & Adventure Muse’ on O’Hara’s trails over the years…..
