Tongariro Northern Circuit, New Zealand

November 25th, 2006 · No Comments

This Lord of the Rings hike is our favourite in New Zealand, a land of many fantastic tramping options.

The only downside is the climate. From a recent trip report:

The weather was shocking. Heavy rain, gales up to 60-80kms. What should have been a 6 hour day of hiking was reduced to 3 hours - we had to bunker down at Oturere Hut rather than pressing onto Ketetahi hut in the North. A group of several other trampers coming the opposite way also made the safety call and settled in for the remaining of the day to get dry and rest. Wearing some of the best gear I was wet to the bone. I’ve never had rain pelted into my body like I did that day - thank goodness the hut had a LPG stove which we fired up for ten hours to dry most of our gear out. As we sat and played cards all afternoon and settled into bed the gales got increasingly strong. Would we be stuck and have to sit out the storm for another 24 hours?

Next morning was glorious and they had a fantastic tramp!
